Community Education for Defense of Women Worker's Rights

AWAM’s commitment to labor rights was highlighted through its support for women workers, particularly in the informal sector and textile industry.

This project aimed to protect the rights of women workers, promote safe working environments, and ensure the implementation of anti-harassment policies at workplaces. A key strategy was to build the leadership and advocacy capacity of women so they could speak up and negotiate their rights.

The initiative successfully trained 206 women workers in legal rights and leadership skills, resulting in the creation of the Women Worker Leaders Group (WWLG). This group became active at the district level and developed linkages with local, provincial, and national advocacy networks. Thirty-two women leaders emerged as vocal advocates within their communities, with six joining established labor federations.

AWAM also facilitated dialogues with factory management and labor departments. Notably, agreements were reached with employers to form anti-harassment committees, and commitments were secured from labor inspectors to monitor implementation.

As a result of these efforts, four domestic workers obtained written employment agreements with clear conditions, setting a rare but significant precedent for workers in informal setups.

The project’s collaboration with the social welfare department also opened opportunities for home-based women workers to showcase their handmade products at exhibitions. These achievements reflect AWAM’s holistic approach—empowering women economically, socially, and legally. The project established trust between the civil society and the government, laying the groundwork for sustained advocacy and labor reform in women-dominated industries.
